Cops arrest 19 men in JB over attempt to smuggle weapons

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 13 Indonesian and six local men were detained for allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons into the country.

They were arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF), who were on duty as part of Ops Benteng at Taman Tampoi Utama in Johor Baru on Jan 1.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said so far, police have not uncovered any leads that indicated that the group of men were trying to launch an attack in Malaysia.

“Our initial investigations have not led to that (attack in Malaysia) so far.

“We are still investigating the main reason they were in possession of the weapons,” he told a press conference after launching a book on the GOF’s history at its headquarters in Cheras Friday (Jan 8).

The police are still in the midst of identifying the remaining suspects, he added.
